Bluehost was founded in the year 2003 by Matt Heaton (also the founder of Hostmonster & FastDomain) and has since been advancing on its goal of becoming a better hosting company. In 2010, Bluehost was acquired by Endurance International Group based in Boston, MA. Matt continued to serve as the CEO of the company till June 2011, after which he stepped down to focus on Bluehost’s hosting platform design and technical structure and was replaced by the then COO Dan Handy. In 2015, the company had their new CEO in Mike Olson after Dan moved to mobile development segment.
Blue Host has seen several revamps in the last couple of years. They have added VPS hosting, Reseller hosting and Dedicated servers to their line of service. Also the plans and pricing of shared hosting has undergone a complete change, with shift to three different plans (Starter, Plus and Business Pro) from a single shared hosting package. The company now also offers managed WordPress hosting and a slew of other custom design services.
Today, Bluehost claims to be the world’s largest cloud based online solutions provider. With its headquarters in Utah and over 700 employees, the company boasts of hosting over 2 million websites worldwide.
Bluehost Hosting Products & Services
Blue Host provides a full range of web hosting capabilities. Their service line includes the following:
Their shared hosting plans are ideal for small and medium level businesses and personal websites. These are available at very cheap prices, while still delivering powerful, proven solutions. There are 3 shared hosting plans available, Starter plan, Plus plan and Business Pro plan, all based on Linux hosting. The minimum term that you can choose is 12 months; there is no option of month-to-month billing cycle. Other hosting terms available are 2 or 3 years.
Bluehost has recently started offering Cloud site solutions, which make it very simple to host your website on the cloud. These provide far greater reliability than shared hosting solution, with mirroring of your website data across 3 different locations and failover technology to ensure your site is up at all times. Faster site load times and scalability are also guaranteed.
Bluehost’s Optimized wordpress hosting (with automatic site backups, wordpress & plug-in updates) is built on VPS technology. There are 4 plans based on number of WP sites managed, RAM requirements and total expected traffic. SiteLock Security and Advanced SiteLock CDN are included as part of all these packages.
If you expect high volumes of traffic on your website and therefore need additional power and performance, Bluehost VPS plans are just the right fit for you. Bluehost offers 4 tiers of Linux based VPS hosting. Please note that windows based VPS is not offered by Blue Host.
Bluehost also provides dedicated servers. These are designed, built and maintained in-house by Bluehost. 3 types of dedicated server options are available to customers.
For details and pricing of all Blue host hosting plans, click on the Hosting Plans tab above.
Features & Control Panel
All hosting packages from Bluehost are feature-laden making them a good value for money. The user dashboard runs on standard cPanel with a customized UI design, so the regular cPanel controls like domain management, name server set up, file management, email options etc. are available alongside additional features like access to site builders, SSL certificate administration, upgrades, dedicated IP address settings, billing screen, anti-spam options etc. The dashboard design is very intuitive and user friendly.
Access to Fantastico & MOJO Moarketplace is included in the basic hosting price that makes installation of blog software, forums, polls, content management systems (like, WordPress, Joomla, Drupal) etc. a breeze, even for a non-technical person.
Here’s a video tutorial on How to install WordPress using MOJO Markeplace in Bluehost cPanel.
Bluehost has built-in support for Cloudflare, goMobi & Weebly. The security features in Bluehost kitty are very valuable. These include 3 anti-spam tools, Apache Spam Assassin, Spam Experts and Spam Hammer. Additionally, secure shell access (SSH) is also offered.
Uptime & Performance
No web host can guarantee 100% uptime. Bluehost also does not make any such claims on their site, but they are very serious about their commitment to network reliability and performance. Blue host hosting have scored an average uptime of 99.9% in 2015, which is commendable at the prices they charge.
Bluehost employs custom-built data centers with full power backups and 24/7 monitoring of servers and network. Additionally, they claim to back up all user accounts on a regular basis.
Bluehost provides its customers with full 24 hrs support via email, phone (toll-free telephone support for US clients) and live chat. Though, this kind of support is offered by several other web hosting companies, what sets Bluehost apart from them are 2 main aspects:
- All the Blue Host helpdesk staff is based out of their Provo, Utah center. They do not outsource any part of their business and hence, the customer care team comprises of all English speaking native individuals. The efficiency and friendliness of the support team is guaranteed with Bluehost.
- Bluehost runs a huge knowledgebase accessible through Bluehost Help Center, which includes comprehensive documentation for its services, troubleshooting tips for common issues and their fixes, detailed instructions for various tasks related to website management, etc. The company also operates its own YouTube channel offering a host of video tutorials.
